How to calculate time and a half
Time-and-a-half rate = hourly rate × 1.5
Overtime pay = overtime hours × time-and-a-half rate
- Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5, or add half of it to itself: half of $18.00 is $9.00, so the rate is $27.00.
- Multiply that rate by your overtime hours.
- To go the other way, divide an overtime rate by 1.5: $27.00 ÷ 1.5 = $18.00.
Odd cents can leave a fraction of a cent. $7.25 × 1.5 is $10.875. The calculator shows $10.88 but multiplies with the full $10.875 and rounds each pay line to the nearest cent, half a cent up. So 5 hours is $54.38, not 5 × $10.88 = $54.40.
Worked example
The Department of Labor's rule book works this case: $12.00 an hour, 46 hours in one workweek, so 6 hours of overtime.
| Line | Working | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Time-and-a-half rate | $12.00 × 1.5 | $18.00 |
| Overtime pay | 6 × $18.00 | $108.00 |
| Of which the half-time extra | 6 × $6.00 | $36.00 |
Add the 40 regular hours, 40 × $12.00 = $480.00, and the week comes to $588.00, the figure in 29 CFR 778.110(a).
Time and a half at common rates
| Hourly rate | Time and a half | Extra per overtime hour |
|---|---|---|
| $12.00 | $18.00 | $6.00 |
| $18.00 | $27.00 | $9.00 |
| $20.00 | $30.00 | $10.00 |
| $25.00 | $37.50 | $12.50 |
| $30.00 | $45.00 | $15.00 |
Which rate it applies to
Multiply your regular rate, which can be higher than your base wage: night-shift differentials and bonuses paid for hours or output are added in first. The shift differential calculator works out that blended rate. Which hours count as overtime, by week and by state, is on the overtime calculator; in California, hours over 8 in a workday also qualify.
Questions
What is time and a half for $15 an hour?
$22.50 an hour. Five overtime hours at that rate pay $112.50.
Is time and a half the same as overtime?
Time and a half is the rate. Overtime is the hours it applies to.
Can my employer pay more than time and a half?
Yes. The law sets a floor, not a ceiling, so an employer or a contract may pay double time or more.
