How to convert salary to hourly
Find what the salary pays in a year, then divide by the hours it pays for in that year.
Hourly rate = yearly salary ÷ (hours a week × paid weeks a year)
A monthly salary is multiplied by 12 first, a twice-a-month salary by 24, a salary paid every two weeks by 26 and a weekly salary by 52. Then the same division applies. The calculator rounds to the cent only at the end, half a cent up.
Common salaries at 2,080 hours
| Yearly salary | Hourly | Weekly | Monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $19.23 | $769.23 | $3,333.33 |
| $50,000 | $24.04 | $961.54 | $4,166.67 |
| $60,000 | $28.85 | $1,153.85 | $5,000.00 |
| $80,000 | $38.46 | $1,538.46 | $6,666.67 |
| $100,000 | $48.08 | $1,923.08 | $8,333.33 |
Fewer hours a week raise the rate. At 37.5 hours a week the year is 1,950 hours, so $70,000 is $35.90 an hour, not $33.65.
Why 2,080 hours
2,080 is 40 hours × 52 weeks. It is the usual payroll shortcut, and it assumes the salary also pays for holidays and vacation days. If those days are paid, keep 52 weeks. If you take unpaid weeks off, lower the weeks figure: $70,000 over 48 paid weeks is 1,920 hours, or $36.46 an hour.
Counting actual workdays instead gives fewer hours: 2,000 in 2026 once the 11 US federal holidays are taken out. See how many work hours are in a year for the month-by-month count for 2026 and 2027.
A year of weekdays is a little longer than 52 weeks, which is why the US federal government divides its employees' annual pay by 2,087 hours, as 5 U.S.C. 5504(b) requires. At 2,087 hours, $70,000 is $33.54 an hour.

Hourly to salary
Multiply the hourly rate by the hours a week and by the paid weeks a year.
Yearly pay = hourly rate × hours a week × paid weeks a year
$25.00 an hour for 40 hours a week over 52 weeks is $52,000 a year. If you also average 5 overtime hours a week at time and a half, add 5 × $37.50 × 52 = $9,750, for $61,750.
Salaried and owed overtime
Being paid a salary does not on its own make you exempt from overtime. For a salaried employee who is owed overtime, the US federal rule turns the salary into an hourly regular rate the same way this calculator does: divide the weekly salary by the hours it is meant to pay for.
- $350 a week for a 35-hour week is a regular rate of $10.00. Hours 36 to 40 are paid at $10.00, and each hour over 40 at $15.00.
- $375 for a 40-hour week is $9.38 an hour.
- A monthly salary is turned into a weekly one by × 12 ÷ 52, and a twice-a-month salary by × 24 ÷ 52. $1,560 a month, or $780 twice a month, for 40-hour weeks is $9.00 an hour.
Choose "per week", "per month" or "twice a month" above and set the hours your salary covers to get the same figures.
