How to convert minutes to decimal hours
An hour has 60 minutes, so each minute is one sixtieth of an hour. Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours.
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60
Minutes = decimal part × 60
Payroll systems and time card totals usually want hours with two decimal places. Most minute values do not divide evenly into hundredths, so the result is rounded, and the exact value to four places is shown beside it.
Hours to minutes converter
Type hours as a decimal, like 2.5 or 0.33, or as hours and minutes, like 2:30. The minutes appear as you type.
Minutes = hours × 60
Hours to minutes for common values. Decimal hours and clock time are not the same thing: 1.5 hours is 1 hour 30 minutes, not 1:50.

Worked example
A time card shows 6 hours 50 minutes on Monday and 9 hours 35 minutes on Tuesday.
| Day | Hours and minutes | Working | Decimal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 6:50 | 6 + 50 ÷ 60 = 6.8333 | 6.83 |
| Tuesday | 9:35 | 9 + 35 ÷ 60 = 9.5833 | 9.58 |
| Total | 16:25 | 16 + 25 ÷ 60 = 16.4167 | 16.42 |
Adding the two rounded days gives 6.83 + 9.58 = 16.41, but converting the 16:25 total gives 16.42. Both days were rounded down, and the two small losses add up. To avoid that, add the minutes first and convert the total once.

Rounding on time cards
Converting to decimal is a different step from rounding clock times. Some employers record clock-in and clock-out times to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth of an hour (6 minutes) or quarter hour (15 minutes). US federal rules accept that practice only if, over time, it does not leave employees paid for less time than they actually worked.
A tenth-of-an-hour system converts cleanly, because every 6 minutes is exactly 0.1 of an hour. A quarter-hour system steps by 15 minutes.

Questions
How many minutes is 2.5 hours?
150 minutes, because 2.5 × 60 = 150. Half an hour is 30 minutes, so 2.5 hours is 2 hours 30 minutes.
How much is 15 minutes in decimal hours?
0.25 hours, because 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25.
Is 7.5 hours the same as 7 hours 50 minutes?
No. 7.5 hours is 7 hours 30 minutes, because half an hour is 30 minutes. 7 hours 50 minutes is 7.83 hours.
Why does 0.67 hours come back as 40 minutes and not exactly?
0.67 is 40 minutes rounded to two decimal places. 0.67 × 60 = 40.2 minutes, which rounds to 40. The exact value of 40 minutes is 0.6667, and the 6s never end.
What is 1 minute in decimal hours?
0.0167 hours to four places, or 0.02 to two places.
